The United States is experiencing a demographic shift unprecedented among major developed nations. Counties with the highest numbers of births have some of the lowest fertility rates. These changes have occurred unevenly across demographic groups, and as a result, gaps by education and race and ethnicity have gotten wider. But the gains are uneven, going mainly to workers with at least a bachelor’s degree rather than those with less education. The country has also become more racially and ethnically diverse, as growing shares of people identify as Asian or Hispanic.

At the end of 2024, Russian companies were short about 2.2 million workers, and almost 70 percent of companies were experiencing labor shortages. All of this makes the current demographic crisis more dangerous than the previous one. A growing number of alternative destinations are opening up for migrants from Central Asia, including the European Union, the Persian Gulf countries, Turkey, and South Korea. According to Interior Ministry statistics, there are currently 3–3.5 million legal labor migrants in Russia, compared with about 4.5 million before the COVID-19 pandemic, and 5–7 million in 2012–2013. But 73.6 percent of that natural decline was offset by the arrival of 12.3 million immigrants.
Figure 2 shows that fertility rates by female age are projected to decline gradually and shift rightward over time. Under these projections, U.S. population’s growth will slow but remain positive. All statistics and Figures cited in this Brief are based on the PWBM microsimulation’s projections. The data are taken from various sources including the Census Bureau, The Centers for Disease Control, the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the University of Michigan Survey Center, and others. The Penn Wharton Budget Model’s microsimulation is based on calibrating and projecting more than 60 U.S. demographic variables such as age, gender, race, marital status, education, family size. Key determinants of the future size and composition of the population are fertility, mortality, and net immigration rates by person attributes including race, gender, and education among others.

- Net domestic migration does not appear in figure 2 for any year with negative flows, like 2025, as it does not contribute to population growth in those years.
- However, the abrupt decline in 2025 demonstrates that foreign migration, while increasingly important to Iowa’s demographic stability, remains subject to sudden fluctuations based on federal immigration policy.
- Domestic migration has generally tracked slightly below the Midwest median over the past decade, but its relative position deteriorated sharply in the most recent year.

- The next generation of Russian leaders will likely inherit a massive demographic crisis, with potential immigrants scared off and the coffers empty.
Bureau of Labor Statistics and the Census Bureau and is the source of the nation’s official statistics on the U.S. labor market – employment, unemployment and wages. The decennial census not only supplies population counts, but also was the source until 2000 of detailed characteristics such as marital status, education levels and birth country. We mainly report U.S. or international data at the country level, but sometimes we look at U.S. states, metropolitan areas or counties/municipalities.

The nation’s public K-12 school system became majority-minority around 2014. The front lines of America’s demographic change are in its schools. Schools, health care systems, and social safety nets were largely designed in and for a different demographic era.

All of that will threaten the country with irreversible demographic contraction, the consequences of which will be felt for many generations to come. The next generation of Russian leaders will likely inherit a massive demographic crisis, with potential immigrants scared off and the coffers empty. Still, as both total fertility rates and birth rates in Russia rose, the authorities began to report that the demographic problem had been resolved.
High school graduates expected to peak around 3.8 million in 2025
The WICHE projections are calculated from data on births, grade 1-12 enrollment, and each state’s graduates. Reported numbers of graduates from 2009 to 2023 and projections from 2024 to 2041 When 2030 comes, the number of high school graduates is forecast to be 3.1% lower than 2023 levels. The headline number in WICHE’s report is that researchers expect the total number of high school graduates in the U.S. to peak this year at between 3.8 million and 3.9 million.
Rather than multiple tables like other 2020 Census Data Products, the Demographic Profile presents an overview of demographic and housing characteristics for a specific geography, all in a single table. We will release more detailed demographic and housing data in August and September 2024. But we use other CPS products as well, including data on voting and turnout from the November Voting and Registration Supplement and data on fertility from the June supplements. ASEC data serve as the basis for the well-known annual Census Bureau report on income, poverty and health insurance in the United States (DeNavas-Walt, Proctor and Smith, demographic 2013). At Pew Research Center, we often rely on the CPS Annual Social and Economic Supplements (ASEC) conducted each March, featuring a larger sample size (about 75,000 households in recent years) and an expanded set of detailed demographic questions.

“The impact on household consumption is obvious, but the larger problem for Beijing may be the hit to social security funds,” he added, noting that demographic pressures were also likely to contribute to weakening credit and lower interest rates. The demographic decline is already feeding through into the economy, as smaller families and an ageing population place greater strain on elderly care. In a nation of 1.41 billion people, a decline of this scale would weigh on labour productivity, consumption and social security, including in richer coastal provinces that have powered much of China’s growth over the past four decades.
When researchers sit down to craft a research project, they first need to decide whether they want to look at an entire population or a subgroup such as Hispanics, employed Americans, immigrants, mothers with children at home or Asian-American Hindus. ” we explored the benefits that may result when a country’s… Women maintain a relatively high level of employment and educational opportunities in relation to men.
